“Les Soldes” are a 5-week long sale periods held twice a year, once in the summer (end of June) and in the winter (early January) in France. The bi-annual sale brings madness and frenzy into the city of Paris, as department stores, boutiques, and outlets clear out items from the previous season. If you are in France during this period, here are some tips for you to take advantage of the sales:
DATES FOR 2019: JANUARY 9 ~ FEBRUARY 19
1. LEADING UP TO THE SALES
Few days prior to the official sale period, most stores (both on/off-line) will start the so-called “private sales” where you will be able to get a head start on your sale shopping. Make sure to sign up for an account prior to this period as these private sales are open to members only.
2. EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM
It’s highly likely that the first day of sale will have the greatest selections in stock. I suggest going on the first few days of the sale to do some scanning and research – see the availabilities, but wait it out because…
3. PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
Shops have several price markdowns and gradually slash prices over the course of the sales period. I remember my IRO coat on sale at -20%, but after the second markdown, I was able to get it at -30%.
4. READ CAREFULLY
Some items bought during the sale periods are sometimes final sale and are not refundable/exchangeable.
5. DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF TO CLOTHES
Even the neighborhood small boutiques will have some sort of promotion going on, whether it’s home goods, electronics, or even vintage!
6. KNOW WHEN TO SPLURGE
It’s easy to get wrapped up during these crazy sale periods, but shop smart by knowing when to splurge. Just because it seems as if everyone is shopping and getting good deals left and right, does not mean you have to and it is OK not to buy anything.
